ArXiv TLDR

Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 31, 2026

1. Overview

ArXiv TLDR (“we”, “our”, or “us”) provides a website and Chrome browser extension that generates AI-powered summaries of arXiv research papers. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information.

ArXiv TLDR is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to arXiv or Cornell University.

2. Information We Collect

2a. Chrome Extension

The ArXiv TLDR Chrome extension accesses the URL of the active browser tab only when you are on an arxiv.org page. This is used solely to identify the arXiv paper ID and display a summary button. We do not collect, store, or transmit your browsing history.

2b. Website

When you paste an arXiv URL or paper ID to generate a summary, we process that paper ID to fetch and summarize the paper. We may log anonymized request metadata (paper ID, timestamp) for abuse prevention and service improvement.

2c. Account Data (Pro Users)

If you create a Pro account, we collect your email address and payment information (processed securely by Stripe). We do not store payment card details.

3. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and improve the summarization service
  • To manage your account and subscription
  • To prevent abuse and enforce usage limits
  • To send transactional emails (receipts, account notices) — no marketing without consent

4. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We may share data with:

  • Anthropic / OpenAI: Paper text is sent to an AI provider to generate summaries. No personal information is included.
  • Stripe: Payment processing for Pro subscriptions.
  • Vercel / Neon: Infrastructure hosting and database providers.

5. Chrome Extension Permissions

The extension requests the following permissions:

  • activeTab: To read the URL of the current tab and detect arXiv paper pages.
  • Host permissions (arxiv.org): To fetch paper metadata directly from arXiv when needed.

No data from your tabs is stored or transmitted beyond what is necessary to generate the paper summary.

6. Cookies & Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand aggregate usage patterns (page views, feature usage). This data is anonymized and does not identify individual users. You can opt out via browser settings or the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

7. Data Retention

We retain account data for as long as your account is active. Anonymized usage logs are retained for up to 90 days. You may request deletion of your account data at any time by contacting us.

8. Your Rights

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data by emailing us at support@arxivtldr.org.

9. Children's Privacy

ArXiv TLDR is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify users of material changes by posting the new policy on this page with an updated date.
